Early Christianity adopted the anchor--long an ancient symbol of security--as a sign of their future hope. In fact, the Letter to the Hebrews refers to hope as "sure and steadfast anchor of the soul." (cf Hebrews 6:19-20) It is fitting, then, that the emblem of Rhode Island, a state founded on the principle of God-given freedom, is the anchor, and its motto "hope." Indeed, the three crosses on the coat of arms of the Diocese of Providence each display curved ends, again signifying the anchor of hope.
It is faith in Jesus Christ, of course, that secures our hope in the ultimate realization of the Kingdom. The Anchor of Hope Fund logo presents this image of Christ as our hope and life through the waters of baptism: the anchor-cross is submerged, and at the same time is rising, from the aqua water into the blue of heaven.
Sharing the good news of the coming of God's Kingdom means working to make it a reality today. A quality, Catholic education is not just for the financially privileged. Through the Anchor of Hope Fund the Diocese of Providence is committed to providing significant, need-based financial assistance to students attending our Catholic Schools without regard to race, ethnicity, gender or creed. Not only do deserving students benefit, but so will our society--today and tomorrow.
