Co-Chairs of the Anchor of Hope Corporate Committee Named by Bishop Tobin

October 14 2008: Today the Office of Stewardship and Development for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence announced the appointment by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Co-Chairs of the Anchor of Hope Corporate Committee; Victoria M. Almeida, Esq., DM and Bernard Jackvony Esq.

Victoria M. Almeida, a Dame in the Order of Malta, is a shareholder with the Law Firm of Adler Pollock and Sheehan in the Litigation, Labor and Employment Law and Health Care Groups and Co-Chair of the Governmental & Legislative Practice Group and the Higher Education Practice Group. An experienced trial attorney, she represents clients in civil and criminal trials in state and federal courts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Victoria is Vice Chair of the Diocesan School Board and remains committed to providing educational opportunities for all who desire a Catholic education. "It is incumbent upon us, as Catholics and Rhode Islanders to support Catholic education. There are 16,000 students currently enrolled in our schools. These students exemplify the core values onveyed in the gospel message of love of God and neighbor. Not only do our students become exceptional participants in the global community, the positive economic impact of Catholic school enrollment on state and municipal budgets is significant. The costs to the State of Rhode Island and to municipalities, were they to bear the financial obligation of educating these 16,000 children would be approximately 184 million dollars," said Miss Almeida.

Bernard Jackvony is the former Lieutenant Governor. He is a nationally recognized fiduciary litigator with the Law Firm of Pannone, Lopes and Devereaux. He concentrates his practice in the areas of trust and estates for individuals, families, fiduciaries and charitable organizations. Mr. Jackvony is eager to engage the business community in opportunities to support the Catholic School system in the Diocese of Providence. "Our RI Catholic schools have a graduation rate of 9.5% and 98 % of those graduates move on to higher learning. The question for the business community is; what better investment can you get? The fact is these are our next generation of leaders and a system that boast those kinds of returns needs our support."

The Anchor of Hope Fund was established in 2001 to support children and families who desire to attend Rhode Island Catholic Schools. The fund has distributed 1.7 million to nearly 600 families, to date in support of this mission. The support of Rhode Island's corporate, philanthropic and business leaders is crucial to assisting these children.

Rhode Island Catholic Schools educate over 15,000 children. These children have proved to have a tremendously positive impact on our society. The philosophy of education in our Catholic schools is one that educates the mind, nurtures the spirit and encourages service The campaign officially kicks off with a Prayer Service led by Father Jaime Garcia on 10-28-2008 at 9:30 am at the Chancery building.
