Giving to Others

September 2016

Our Rhode Island Catholic community plays a critical role in helping others in need throughout our state. Supporters like you, who generously give to the Catholic Charity Appeal, are simply doing as Jesus has asked of us, giving to others in the spirit of God.

The power of giving was on display in the local media when one of the Diocese of Providence’s most important ministries, Emmanuel House, was featured in a recent story about steps being taken to help the increasing number of homeless men in Providence.

Bishop Tobin and the Diocese opened Emmanuel House in 2010 to provide additional warm beds to the many homeless men in Providence. And our partnership with the State of Rhode Island has continued over the past six years, providing emergency shelter to men every single day throughout each year.

Now, the work of the Church, thanks to generous Catholics like you, is once again proving that the spirit of giving is alive and well in Rhode Island. Caring people like you have answered God’s call to serve one another, and those in need … serving people who are less fortunate, out of the goodness of your heart.

Emmanuel House, as Director Dottie Perrault said, “is more than just beds.”

Today, that rings true, once again.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza recently unveiled plans for a multi-part effort to reduce poverty, homelessness, and panhandling in Providence.

The city’s combined efforts, along with the Diocese of Providence, will open up the Emmanuel House to a “sobering diversion program” on the second floor of the building.

A homeless man who comes to the new program at Emmanuel House will not only be given a place to rest and sober-up, but will receive a warm meal, a shower, and clothing. He will be given a medical assessment by a registered nurse, plus counseling and referrals for treatment to fight his addiction to alcohol.

It is the amazing work of our Catholic Community that makes Emmanuel House, and the many other ministries of the Diocese of Providence, possible.

Generous Catholics like you who support the Catholic Charity Appeal are answering God’s call to lend a hand and give help to others. You make a real difference for so many others in need, who would have nowhere else to turn if not for such a caring community. Thank you.

Matthew 25:35-40

35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
